Methodological Framework for Evaluating Regional Venture Syndication and Academic Spin-off Trajectories
To rigorously evaluate the transmission mechanisms linking supranational European Union capital allocation to academic valorization in Belgium, this dissertation employs a multi-level empirical framework grounded in regional innovation ecosystem analysis. The methodology operationalizes technology transfer as an interconnected, multi-stage trajectory wherein public-private co-investment syndicates interact with localized academic infrastructure. By systematically comparing syndication structures, the research design captures the distinct behavioral and networking patterns distinguishing private venture funds from publicly backed financing vehicles (Guerini & Quas, 2017). This comparative perspective is integrated with institutional case-level observations of localized science park ecosystems, particularly drawing upon the developmental trajectory of the Ghent University Technology Park to evaluate how embedded intermediary services facilitate research commercialization (Debackere, 2015). Additionally, the empirical protocol assesses the role of open innovation networks and collaborative interfirm arrangements, specifically tracing how new technology-based spin-offs establish strategic alliances within the Belgian biotechnology cluster to overcome early-stage resource constraints (Spithoven & Teirlinck, 2015). By combining longitudinal financing event histories with structural alliance mapping, this methodological architecture isolates the value-added contributions of EU-backed equity mechanisms while controlling for cluster-specific agglomeration economies.
