Integrating artificial intelligence literacy into mandatory general-education curricula ensures that all undergraduate students develop essential critical competencies regardless of their primary field of study. When higher education institutions fail to institute structured AI curricula, student engagement with automated tools operates largely within an informal hidden curriculum, which frequently fosters uneven technological competencies and unexamined ethical practices ("Artificial Intelligence Literacy in Higher Education," 2026). Mandatory foundational training counters this dynamic by instilling disciplined evaluative practices, ethical awareness, and conceptual understanding across diverse degree programs. A common counterargument contends that general-education requirements already place an excessive credit burden on undergraduate degree pathways and that individual academic departments can address domain-specific AI applications more effectively on an elective basis. Opponents also suggest that centralized mandates risk pedagogical rigidity given the rapid evolution of technological systems. However, relying solely on departmental discretion creates profound disparities in academic integrity and literacy, as fragmented departmental guidelines frequently neglect foundational ethical and algorithmic principles ("Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education," 2025; "Generative Artificial Intelligence Policy," 2024). Standardized institutional frameworks provide a cohesive baseline that enables students to critically interrogate algorithmic outputs rather than passively consume them.
