3.1 Disciplinary Disparities and Foundational Academic Knowledge Gaps
Structural articulation between vocational education and training providers and universities relies on institutional frameworks designed to facilitate credit transfer and student mobility across the Australian tertiary landscape. Policy mechanisms such as memorandum of understanding partnerships establish formal recognition pathways, guaranteeing academic credit and encouraging dual-sector progression across regional tertiary environments (VET in Higher Education:A Future for Regional Australia?, 2011). However, comparing institutional policy intentions with practical disciplinary realities reveals substantial frictions in student transition. While overarching qualification frameworks aim to streamline student movement between vocational training and higher education degrees (Designing a Sustainable Vocational Education and Training (VET) System, 2012), formal credit transfer agreements frequently conceal disparities in foundational academic preparation. In practical disciplines such as engineering, articulated students regularly receive credit recognition and transfer directly into advanced coursework, yet they often lack the theoretical mathematics background required to navigate university-level units successfully (Development of mathematical pathways for VET students to articulate to related higher education courses: a focus on engineering, 2015). This structural disconnect demonstrates that competency-based curricula in vocational training do not automatically align with the analytical paradigms emphasized within university degree programs. Consequently, nominal credit transfer policies must be supported by practical curricular bridges that systematically reconcile theoretical models with applied vocational knowledge. Without targeted academic bridging interventions that address specific disciplinary disparities, institutional mobility frameworks cannot fully guarantee sustained academic retention, educational progression, and equity for transitioning vocational students across Australian higher education.
